Derby County manager Frank Lampard is set to hold talks with Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich regarding the managerial role at Stamford Bridge this week, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The London club are now on the lookout for a manager, with Maurizio Sarri recently becoming the new manager of Italian giants Juventus.

Plenty of high-profile names have been linked with the vacant managerial role at Stamford Bridge, but it now looks as if the Blues will turn towards a club legend.

Lampard is clearly no stranger to the Stamford Bridge faithful, having won 13 major trophies with Chelsea and making over 650 appearances for the club.

It is understood that Derby have offered the 40-year-old a new contract, in a desperate attempt to keep the former England international at Pride Park, after guiding them to the Championship play-off final last term.

But the Daily Mail claims that Lampard is set to meet with Abramovich this week, as the pair look to finalise the appointment by the end of the week.

Lampard took charge of the Rams in May 2018, and has since won 24 out of 57 games in charge of the East Midlands outfit.

The Verdict

It seems pretty much inevitable that Lampard will become the new manager of Chelsea, and it's a managerial appointment that will definitely divide opinions.

In my view, I don't think that Lampard is ready for the Chelsea job yet. He needs to remain at Derby for another year at least, before making the step-up to such a big job.

He had a hugely impressive debut season in charge of the Rams, but he isn't the finished article yet by any means.
