Chelsea have won the race to sign exciting 16-year-old Travis Akomeah from Watford, as per an update on Twitter from transfer guru Fabrizio Romano.

Romano's tweet states that the champions of Europe have beaten Liverpool and Bournemouth to the young defender's signature.

The highly-rated defender has represented England at youth level and is likely to initially join Chelsea's U18s.

Should he immediately link up with the U18s, then the Blues' next game is away to Watford, the club he has just departed.

Despite representing England at youth level already, Akomeah remains eligible to represent Ghana through his parents.

Romano's tweet has outlined that an agreement has been reached and the paperworks are all now signed.

It remains to be seen what the plans would have been should Bournemouth secured the services of the exciting defender, with the most likely option being time with the club's U18s.

The verdict

Given the high-profile nature of the clubs in pursuit, it is clear to see that Akomeah is a bright spark who could go on to enjoy excellent success with the Blues.

Of course, there is a long and winding road to regular first team contention for the young defender, but ultimately, he is now within a youth set up that see regular success and with plenty of opportunities to progress his career.

Whilst Bournemouth will be disappointed to miss out on a young player with an abundance of talent, they are still a club with excellent young players coming through the ranks.

This will certainly bode well for the club from a financial sense, with other clubs looking to spend millions to mount a promotion push, the Cherries have more than capable options coming through their academy.
