Jonny Williams will join Charlton on their pre-season trip to Spain, report London News Online.

The 25-year-old is currently a free agent after Charlton chose not to renew his contract, but the Addicks could offer him a new deal if he impresses on what will be a trial basis.

The midfielder only arrived at The Valley in January, signing a short-term deal before going on to make 16 appearances as Charlton won promotion via the play-offs.

He impressed too, so it was a little surprising that Charlton took the decision not to renew his deal, although they may have been deterred by his injury record.

In the last three years, he has only played 36 times, hence Charlton's apprehension, but the visit to Spain will provide Williams with an opportunity to demonstrate his fitness levels and hopefully win over the coaching staff.

The club is currently down to bare bones, with less than 10 first-team players in the squad, and Williams would slot in to fill the gap left by the exit of Joe Aribo.

The Verdict

This is a sensible decision from Charlton. Williams is a very gifted player, he proved that in his spell last season and if he can stay fit across an entire season he could become a very important player for Lee Bowyer.

His inclusion in the squad for training in Spain indicates that he is certainly in contention for a new contract and with Charlton in need of players he could find himself in the right place at the right time.

The likely outcome is that Williams will receive another short-term deal, possibly a year, so that he can prove his fitness and show he can still cut it at Championship level.
