Charlton Athletic's George Lapslie has said that it has been "hard work" coming back from the persistent injury issues that he has suffered with so far this season.

The 22-year-old made his first start in a Charlton shirt since August at the weekend, and scored the third goal as the Addicks defeated Luton 3-1 to move up to 18th in the league table.

The midfielder has had a torrid time with injuries this season, playing a total of just six times. Before the weekend, he last featured for Charlton at the start of November against Millwall.

Speaking to Charlton's official website, Lapslie went into detail with the issues he has been suffering with.

“I’ve done my hamstring tendon three times in a row, it was a bit of a mess-up the first two times," the 22-year-old said.

“We didn't really know what it was but the third image came back clearer and we knew it was a hamstring tendon and its been about five months now, on and off, just grinding in the gym."

Despite the setbacks that have hampered his season, the Charlton academy graduate was pleased to contribute towards Saturday's win.

“It’s been hard work but for moments like that it's worth it. Contributing to a win is always nice but it still would have been just as good if I didn't come on today and we got three points," he said.

Charlton's next game is against Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough on Wednesday evening.

The Verdict

Lapslie's insight into his difficult time on the sidelines is eye-opening, and it meant that his goal for the Addicks on the weekend meant a lot more.

Lee Bowyer will now be hoping that the 22-year-old remains fit and is able to contribute for the remaining twelve games of the season.

Lapslie's performance could be rewarded with a starting place this Wednesday if Bowyer sees fit.
