Charlton Athletic have been tipped to return for Crewe winger Charlie Kirk but the Addicks face competition from elsewhere, according to journalist Alan Nixon

The south London club have made five new signings so far this summer as Nigel Adkins looks to shape his squad in what is his first summer window in charge at the Valley.

Charlton get their League One season underway on the weekend against Oxford United but it seems their transfer business is not done just yet.

The Addicks reportedly made a move for Kirk on the final day of the winter window but their £500,000 offer was unsuccessful and he remained with the North West club.

Nixon has hinted that they could reignite their interest in the 23-year-old but revealed that they're likely to face competition from elsewhere.

Kirk has now entered the final year of his Crewe contract, having penned a two-year extension in June 2020.

A product of the League One club's academy system, the left-winger has been a key attacking player over the past three seasons in particular – scoring 27 times and adding 34 assists in that time.

The Verdict

This could be a fantastic signing for Charlton as they'd be landing a winger that proved he has League One quality last season and at 23, should only improve over the next few years.

The business the club has done this summer has been good but you feel more additions are needed to ensure that they can properly compete in what looks set to be a competitive race for promotion.

Given his contract situation, Kirk may be available on a cut-price deal and that could prove a real coup for the Addicks given the interest in him.
