Charlton Athletic midfielder George Lapslie has revealed his ambition to captain the Addicks in the future.

Lapslie has climbed through the Charlton academy ranks to feature in the first-team squad over the last three seasons, with the 22-year-old having made 41 appearances for the senior side so far.

The midfielder has struggled to establish himself in Lee Bowyer's side this term, due to the form of others in addition to his own injury problems, but he has managed to make a total of four appearances for the club this term.

Furthermore, Lapslie has recently graduated from Anglia Ruskin University with a degree in sports nutrition, with this being a qualification he completed alongside his footballing commitments at The Valley.

Speaking in an interview with South London Press, the Addicks youth product has now outlined his aims and he claims that he is currently focused on simply applying himself in training, but that he also holds more lofty longer-term ambitions.

“My main current ambition is just to apply myself to every training session like it is the most important one," he said.

“One day it will be my dream to captain Charlton but I know I have got a long way to go. It’s not something on the horizon in any way, shape or form – but it would be surreal.”

The Verdict

Lapslie has shown really promising signs since breaking into the Charlton side during their promotion campaign last season, and there is no reason why he cannot fulfil this ambition in the not-too-distant future.

His passion and work ethic both suggest he is more than capable of occupying the important role in the future, and it would be excellent for Charlton to have a boyhood fan of the club as their captain.

This would also definitely be a popular move among Charlton fans when the time is right, and you cannot help but think it might be on the cards if Lapslie can establish himself in the side over the next couple of seasons.
