Charlton’s friendly with CS Gaz Metan Mediaș ended in farce last night after the Romanian side refused to play following the referee's decision to award the Addicks a penalty and send two of their players off.

Lee Bowyer's side were winning 1-0 against the top-flight opposition and had a chance to go two up after a penalty was awarded.

However, the Romanian outfit were clearly unhappy with the decision and the Championship sides official Twitter account revealed that the referee was man-handled, so he sent two CS Gaz Metan Mediaș players off.

It resulted in them withdrawing from the match and Addicks striker Lyle Taylor took to social media after the game with his light-hearted take on why it went on.

"The lengths people go to to stop me taking penalties is just mental... ????????‍♂️????????‍♂️???? #JusticeForLyle."

The 29-year-old enjoyed a fantastic campaign for the Londoners last season, scoring 22 goals as Charlton won promotion back to the Championship with some of those coming from the spot, with Taylor having a notable, and usually successful, way of taking penalties.

The Verdict

This was a remarkable thing to happen and it's a shame for Charlton that the players didn't manage to get a longer run out.

But, there's not much they can do about it, with the actions of the Romanian side awful and they will have been amazed at what went on.

It's good to see Taylor didn't take it too seriously though, although he is probably slightly annoyed he wasn't able to get his goal!

The focus now will be on the next pre-season game as the side prepare for the opener against Blackburn in early August.
