Charlton Athletic have completed the signing of Icelandic international winger Johann Berg Gudmundsson from AZ Alkmaar on a free transfer.
The 23 year-old was a free agent after leaving the Dutch side following the expiration of his contract and, after penning a two-year contract, told the club’s website that he was looking forward to the challenge of playing in England.
“I’m excited to be here,” he said. “It’s a new challenge for me and I can’t wait to start training with the lads.
“I heard of the interest a few weeks ago and obviously I’m on a free transfer so there were a lot of things happening., but in the end I decided to go with Charlton.
“It’s a great club with a good history and I think we are building something good here.”
Along with 32 international caps, the winger has experience of European football having played in the Europa League for AZ, who made the quarter finals of the competition last season.
The Icelander is no stranger to London either – he had spells with both Fulham and Chelsea whilst studying at the International School of London as a youngster but returned to his home country after failing to settle in England’s capital.
