With just over a week to go until the new League One season gets underway, Charlton Athletic desperately need a goalkeeper.

The only senior goalkeeper in their ranks is Dillon Phillips - a 23-year-old with a serious lack of first-team experience under his belt.

This is a very worrying situation for Lee Bowyer's men and signing a new stopper before next Saturday's trip to Sunderland must be the priority.

After Ben Amos impressed between the sticks last season, Charlton should look to dip into the loan market again and land Connor Ripley on a temporary deal from Middlesbrough.

The 25-year-old is the third choice stopper at Boro but he would definitely be first-choice at The Valley.

In his career, Ripley has had numerous loan spells and that included a terrific stint at Oldham Athletic in the 2016/17 season, where he almost single-handedly kept the Latics up with the most clean sheets in the division.

His loan spell at Bury was less successful last season but the frail defence in front of him did not help and it was a helpless task from when he joined.

This could be the last chance for Ripley to show Middlesbrough that he is good enough for first-team action at The Riverside Stadium and if he has a successful season with Charlton, he might get his opportunities.

In the short-term, Charlton would benefit from the 6ft 3in stopper's solidity between the posts and he could be the man to help them win promotion back to the Championship.
