Charlton Athletic are looking to sign midfielder Jon Russell on loan from Huddersfield Town, journalist Alan Nixon has reported.

Russell has rarely featured for the Terriers this season, amid reports that he has been frozen out at the John Smith's Stadium for refusing to sign a new contract, with his current deal expiring in the summer.

That has already attracted attention from elsewhere in the Championship, with West Brom and Rotherham United both previously credited with an interest in the 22-year-old.

Now however, it seems there is a chance that the midfielder's next destination could be League One with Charlton.

According to this latest update, Charlton have made an offer to sign Russell on loan for the rest of the season, with manager Dean Holden keen to sign the Huddersfield.

It is thought that while there is interest in Russell from the Championship, those clubs are apparently keen to wait until he becomes a free agent in the summer, before making their move.

The Verdict

This could be an excellent signing for Charlton if they do manage to pull it off.

While he has played very little this season, Russell had a key role in Huddersfield's run all the way to the Championship play-off final last season.

As a result, you do feel as though he could be a big asset for the Addicks in League One, as Holden looks to continue to oversee an improvement since his appointment at The Valley.

Indeed, given the level of interest there appears to have been in Russell recently, this would be a coup if Charlton complete this deal, so it is certainly one that is worth pursuig for them.
