Charlton Athletic have taken to Twitter with the tongue-in-cheek suggestion that Lyle Taylor is the best penalty taker in world football.

The Addicks' Twitter account issued the claim in response to a tweet suggesting Chelsea midfielder Jorginho held the mantle following his two spot-kicks during Chelsea's 4-4 draw with Ajax on Tuesday night.

Taylor has scored 10 penalties since joining Charlton from Wimbledon in the summer of 2018, with two of these having come this season during Championship matches against Barnsley and Reading.

The striker is currently out of action for Charlton after suffering a leg injury back in September, but Lee Bowyer's side have learned to cope with his absence and they are currently sitting 10th in the table.

Charlton posted the tweet singing the praises of their frontman on Wednesday morning.

Taylor has scored 30 goals during his 51 appearances for Charlton since joining the club last year, but fellow striker Macauley Bonne has managed to fill the goalscoring void during his absence by netting five goals in nine outings this term.

The Verdict

This of course a light-hearted tweet from Charlton, but Taylor's penalty-taking ability should not be played down as he has scored some key goals from the spot for the Addicks since his move to the club.

The striker regularly cuts a composed figure in front of goal and Charlton will receive a massive boost when he returns from his injury lay-off, even though Bonne has performed admirably well in his absence.

Taylor's return will lift a Charlton side who are currently picking themselves up following a 1-0 defeat to Preston, while it will be interesting to see whether Bowyer decides to deploy Taylor and Bonne in attack as a pairing.
