Charlton Athletic defender Ben Purrington will not be fit for his side's clash with Bristol City this evening, according to South London Press journalist Richard Cawley.

Purrington has been absent for Charlton's last two matches against Fulham and Derby with two injuries to his calf and groin, and it now appears he has not recovered in time for his side's midweek trip to Ashton Gate.

This means Jake Forster-Caskey should retain his spot in the left wing-back role after excelling in the unfamiliar position during the Addicks' last two outings in the Championship.

It has also emerged that defender Adam Matthews and forward Chuks Aneke will both be absent for tonight's match, with Matthews set to be out until the next international break and Aneke predicted to return against West Brom on the weekend.

Matthews has only made two appearances for Charlton since joining the club in early September, while Aneke has been absent for the last two matches after previously making eight substitute appearances this term.

Charlton will be targeting back-t0-back wins against Bristol City following a 3-0 victory over Derby on the weekend, while they will be facing a Robins side that recently let slip of their 10-game unbeaten run following defeat to Luton on Saturday.

The Verdict

It was seen as a big loss when Purrington was initially ruled out of the Charlton side through injury, but Forster-Caskey's highly impressive form in his absence has certainly eased the Addicks' concerns.

The former Brighton man has adapted well to his new role on the left flank to the point where Purrington will perhaps have his work cut out to regain his place on the left side of Charlton's defence.

Meanwhile, Aneke's absence will continue to be a slight concern given that the striker has been heavily used from the bench this season, but the fact he is set to return against Albion means it cannot be a serious injury.
