Charlton Athletic have completed the signing of defender Adam Matthews on a one-year deal.

The 27-year-old joins as a free agent, having spent the past few weeks training with the Addicks following his departure from Sunderland.

The experienced right-back was an important player for Sunderland last season, making 28 appearances for the Black Cats in all competitions, scoring one goal.

Charlton had been looking for another right-back, after Anfernee Dijksteel left the club to join Middlesbrough earlier this summer.

Charlton were promoted from League One via the play-offs last season and have made a fantastic start to the new campaign in the Championship.

Lee Bowyer's side are unbeaten in the Championship this season and are currently second in the league table after winning four of their opening six matches.

The Addicks face a two-week period before their next game due to the international break, but will be hoping to continue their momentum against Birmingham City in under two weeks time.

The Verdict

This could be a smart signing for Charlton on a free transfer. Matthews is a good player and he will add some quality and experience to the Charlton defence.

Charlton needed an additional option at right-back, after Dijksteel left for Middlesbrough during the summer transfer window, so bringing in Matthews is a smart move.

The ex-Celtic player is good defensively and going forward, which should suit the way that Bowyer likes his Charlton side to play. This could turn out to be a very good piece of business from the Addicks.
