Peterborough have rejected a £4m offer from Charlton for striker Ivan Toney on deadline day.

Lee Bowyer has been desperate to strengthen his squad in this window and bringing in a striker was a priority for the Addicks as they look to consolidate themselves as a Championship outfit.

However, Toney won't be making the move to The Valley, with Football Insider revealing that a £4m offer put down for the 23-year-old was turned down by The Posh.

There has been a lot of interest from elsewhere in Toney, but Darren Ferguson's side have maintained that they wouldn't cash in on the former Newcastle man, who scored an impressive 16 goals in the third-tier last season.

With the deadline fast approaching it seems unlikely that any deal for the player will be revisited and it will be great news to Peterborough.

It also suggests that Charlton will manage to keep hold of their top scorer from last season, Lyle Taylor, who had been the subject of four bids from Brentford and interest from Middlesbrough.

The Verdict

This is a shame for Charlton as Toney would have been an exciting signing when you consider the potential he has.

Although, you do wonder that if he did sign it would spell the end of Taylor's time at The Valley and it's vital that they keep hold of him.

As for Toney, whilst the chance to play at a higher level would have appealed, he is at a good club to help his development and if he keeps scoring goals then opportunities will come.

This is the risk clubs take in leaving deals so late and Peterborough fans will be delighted their club stood firm after that big offer.
