Charlton Athletic are weighing up a move for Preston North End goalkeeper Chris Maxwell, according to latest reports from Sky Sports.

It's no surprise to see the Addicks looking to bolster their ranks in the goalkeeping position, after Jed Steer was recalled early from his loan spell by Aston Villa.

Maxwell has made 11 appearances for the Lilywhites this season, but hasn't featured since he was sent-off in Preston's draw with Ipswich earlier in the season.

He has been unlucky to have been dropped from the starting XI on his return to the side, but it's understandable given the impressive recent performances by Declan Rudd.

But despite Preston boss Alex Neil making changes to his side for their FA Cup defeat to Doncaster Rovers, Maxwell wasn't even named in the squad, which speaks volumes.

He is evidently down the pecking order at Deepdale and is likely to be eyeing a transfer away from the club in this month's transfer window.

The 28-year-old has been capped at youth level for Wales, but is yet to break into the first-team, so he'll certainly be after a move to keep his slim chances of a call-up alive.

The Verdict

This could be the missing piece in the jigsaw for Charlton's promotion bid.

Maxwell is out of favour in the Preston team at the moment, so this would be a good move for both parties involved.

In the earlier stages of this season, he has proved himself to be a Championship standard goalkeeper, and the Addicks would be fortunate to acquire a goalkeeper of his calibre.
