Charlton Athletic midfielder Jack Forster-Caskey is reportedly on the verge of extending his contract with the club.

The 25-year-old's current contract at the Valley is set to expire at the end of June but Addicks boss Lee Bowyer has indicated a deal to extend his stay at Charlton is close.

Speaking to LondonNewsOnline.co.uk, Bowyer said: "We’re nearly there with Jake. It could happen quick."

The central midfielder has grabbed eight goals and 13 assists in 61 appearances since he joined from Brighton and Hove Albion in January 2017.

A serious knee injury kept the Englishman sideline throughout the majority of last season, with his only appearance coming in an 11-minute cameo from the bench against Scunthorpe United in the third last game of the season.

Bowyer also suggested he would be like to extend the contract of another out-of-contract midfielder, Joe Aribo, and make a number of additions to the squad before the start of pre-season.

He said: "I’d like to bring in some new players before we go back [for pre-season] next Friday so that they can all start pre-season, then try to bring in another one or two with maybe a few loans."

Verdict

A contract extension for Forster-Caskey looks like good news for both parties.

Having been at Charlton for the recovery from his knee injury, the club's medical staff will be in the best position to judge whether he can get back to his best this season.

Money is going to be tight at the Valley with the current owners still looking to sell the club, so bringing back a player who has proven his worth over the last two and a half years is smart business.

Charlton return to the Championship next year after three years away and having players who know the league could be key if Bowyer's side are to have an extended stay in the second flight.

Forster-Caskey will provide exactly that having been a mainstay in the Brighton side in both the 2013/14 and 2014/15 campaigns.
