Charlton Athletic are set to complete a move for former Celtic and Crystal Palace midfielder Joe Ledley on a free transfer, according to Football Insider.

Ledley has been without a club since his Derby County contract was cancelled by mutual consent in January 2019, but it now appears he is preparing to link up with the Addicks after almost 11 months without a club.

It is believed that Ledley has accepted a contract offer from the South London outfit after reportedly training with the club this week, with the 34-year-old set to help ease Lee Bowyer's midfield concerns in his injury-hit squad.

Charlton's recent injury crisis has seen midfielders such as Jonny Williams, Beram Kayal and Josh Cullen all ruled out for significant periods. and Ledley is now set to provide another much-needed body in the centre of the park.

Bowyer's side have dropped to 17th in the Championship following a poor run of form which has seen fail to win in their last seven games, but Ledley will now add depth and experience to the squad with over 250 Championship appearances to his name.

The Verdict

Charlton's injury woes have been well-documented of late with Bowyer even having struggled to name a starting eleven in recent weeks, so he will definitely welcome the addition of a further body to his side.

Ledley would also arrive at The Valley with plenty of quality and Championship experience, while it also bodes well that he proved to be a success at Derby after arriving at the club in similar circumstances back in 2017.

The one risk attached to the move is Ledley's fitness level seeing as he has not played first-team football for nearly a year, but the fact Charlton look set to sign him after watching him in training suggests the club is happy with his condition.
