Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has revealed he will take the advice of one of his predecessors in the shape of Alan Curbishley during the October international break.

Bowyer took charge of Charlton in March 2018, and guided the club to promotion back to the Championship the following season, with the Addicks now tenth in the Championship after 11 games of the league campaign.

Speaking after his side's 2-2 draw with Fulham at Craven Cottage on Saturday afternoon, Bowyer revealed that the former Charlton boss had spoken to him following his appointment at The Valley.

Discussing what Curbishley has told him, Bowyer told News Shopper: “Curbishley told me when I took over, ‘you need to take break, when you get a chance to take a break, you take it, you need to, so I’m taking his advice."

Describing the work he has done since taking on the role, and his plans for the international break, Bowyer continued: “I’ve been working crazy hours, watching game after game after game, doing homework, which is my job.

“But there comes a point you get burnt out, same as the players.

“You need to take a rest. So 100% I’ll be taking a break.”

It will be a busy week of action for Charlton when they return after the international break, with the Addicks set to host Derby County before travelling to Bristol City and West Brom all within seven days of the resumption of domestic football.

The Verdict

I think this is a smart move from Bowyer.

Charlton have been through plenty of emotions in the past year or so, and even though it has largely been positive, that is still something that is going to have been mentally taxing for Bowyer and co.

The international break therefore gives him the perfect opportunity to switch off from everything, even for a brief period of time, before that hectic return to action in just under a fortnight's time.

It is also worth noting, given his past experience at the club, there are probably few better than Curbishley for Bowyer to turn to for advice, so that could be a pretty useful thing for the Addicks to call upon going forward.
