Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer has said that Chuks Aneke has yet to show his full potential at the club because of continuous injury setbacks.

Aneke has been sidelined from a total of eight matches for the Addicks this season, and has missed the last four league games in succession following an injury suffered to his groin.

According to London News Online, the 26-year-old has returned to first-team training alongside fellow striker Lyle Taylor this week, and is poised to make a return to the bench for Charlton ahead of the trip to Middlesbrough this Saturday.

Lee Bowyer has said that the club may need to do something differently with Aneke this time around to avoid any further setbacks.

“The problem for Chuks is that we need to get him to a certain level fitness wise and unfortunately for us and him he has just kept breaking down," the Charlton boss told London News Online.

Bowyer also told Addicks fans that they have yet to see the best of the 26-year-old in a Charlton shirt, who signed for the club in the summer from Milton Keynes Dons on a free transfer.

“We’re going to have to look at doing things slightly differently this time around. We definitely ain’t see the best of him yet.”

The Verdict

It will be good news for Charlton fans that they will have another striking option available to them on the bench for the Middlesbrough game this Saturday at the Riverside Stadium.

Aneke will be doing all he can to not aggravate his former problem, as he looks to stake his claim for a starting spot in the Charlton team, having not had the opportunity to do so for the Addicks yet this season.
