Charlton boss expects to leave club after relegation, star player may follow

It is believed that Charlton Athletic manager Jose Riga expects to be sacked by the club once the Championship season ends on Saturday, according to reports via the Sevenoaks Chronicle.

Riga took over from Karel Fraeye in January and oversaw an upturn in form, but it ultimately proved not enough to keep them in the division.

The Belgian started his second spell in charge of the club with a 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Hull, but recorded credible wins over Middlesbrough, Birmingham and Brentford.

If Riga is sacked, it will be the sixth time that owner Roland Duchatelet has dispensed of the services of his managers since he took over the club in January 2014.

Many fans have been protesting more frequently about Duchatelet’s ownership since the Addicks’ relegation was confirmed, although they had become disillusioned with Duchatelet’s reign almost as soon as he took over.

Meanwhile, star player Johann Berg Gudmundsson, who is widely expected to leave the club in the summer, has not moved to dispell any claims about his future:

Speaking to Newshopper, he said: “We are just going to finish the last game and then concentrate on the Euros and see what happens after that.”

“I don’t want to be concentrating too much into the future. I’m just going to look forward to the Euros right now.”
