Charlton Athletic boss Ben Garner has warned Sheffield Wednesday that his side will be heading to Hillsborough on Saturday "with the attitude that we're going there to win".

The Addicks head into the League One tie on the back of two impressive results at The Valley.

Garner's side beat Derby County on the weekend and knocked Championship outfit QPR out of the Carabao Cup on penalties on Tuesday night – with the hosts much the better side in normal time.

A trip to face Wednesday at Hillsborough will be no easy task, however, with Darren Moore's side tipped by many to secure promotion back to the second tier this term.

Speaking after Tuesday's victory over the R's, Garner revealed how he would approach the game and warned the Owls that his team are heading to South Yorkshire with their eyes firmly set on taking all three points.

"I think we have to go with full respect because they're a very good team," said the Addicks boss. "I know Darren Moore well, he's a great guy. He's an absolute gentleman in the football world.

"We go there with respect and complete understanding of what they do but also with the attitude that we're going there to win.

"We want to play the way we want to play. We know it's a tough place but we want to embrace those challenges and look forward to them. After tonight we can certainly look forward to it.

"There's a different game plan for every game if I'm honest because every team is different. There is no different approach for me whether we're home or away, it makes no difference to me.

"Sometimes you might have to speak about the crowd or the environment, you're making players aware of things, but in terms of how we play I never think home or away, I just think what's the best way to win the game and try to put that in place."

The Verdict

Charlton remain unbeaten through their first three games of the season but face arguably their toughest test yet on Saturday in a trip to Hillsborough.

Wednesday are a difficult opponent and even stronger on their home turf. One point would represent an impressive result but supporters will love to hear that Garner has one thing on his mind – a victory.

The way they controlled the game against an R's side that included some quality players on Tuesday will give him hope that they can go toe-to-toe with the Owls and come out on top.

There are positive signs from the early weeks of Garner's tenure.
