Charlton Athletic boss Ben Garner hopes to sit down with Addicks owner Thomas Sandgaard this week and find out what pond the League One club will be fishing in when the January transfer window opens.

Garner's side battled back from two goals down twice to earn a 4-4 draw with Ipswich Town on Saturday in miraculous circumstances – with four goals scored in second-half stoppage time.

That result leaves Charlton 9th in the table after 17 games and showed that they're are able to compete with the top sides in the division.

Garner will be hoping to strengthen his squad one the winter window rolls around, however, and speaking after Saturday's game he revealed he hoped to have talks with Sandgaard, who was due to be at The Valley for the Ipswich game.

Asked whether he planned to discuss January with the Addicks owner this week, he told FLW: "Yeah, hopefully.

"We need to have a sit-down, Thomas has been back in America. I've spoken to him a few times on the phone and zoom but I want to look ahead to January now and know, firstly, what pond we're fishing in, and whatever pond that is, no problem, as long as I know.

"And then we need to go to work on it, we try and strengthen the key areas, and we also need to hope and pray that injuries today aren't serious because in the meantime, we've not got a great deal of depth, we're quite a small squad.

"That's going to be key getting through to January, keeping the squad fit and keeping everyone available as best we can."

The Verdict

Supporters will be happy to hear that Garner is looking to be proactive and get things moving already with a view to strengthening the squad in January.

The manager made some initial personnel changes after taking charge in the summer and is clearly keen to continue shaping his squad when the winter window opens.

The Addicks need to do so if they're to keep pace with the League One top six this season as it's a strong division once again.

Sandgaard has come in for some criticism from fans but a good January window would surely win back some favour.
