Charlton Athletic fans will be hoping for a busy summer transfer window.

The 2021/22 campaign has been a disappointing one for the Addicks – seeing Johnnie Jackson's side battling at the wrong end of the League One table.

Owner Thomas Sandgaard has claimed he's aiming for automatic promotion next season and will strengthen in the summer accordingly but the proof will be in the pudding.

Charlton have made their fair share of frustrating signings in recent years and here, we've highlighted the two most underwhelming in the past five years – Do you agree?

Marcus Maddison

Marcus Maddison arrived at The Valley in October 2020 with an utterly ridiculous League One record to his name.

The attacking midfielder had churned out goals and assists in season after season at Peterborough United, bagging 62 goals and 92 assists for the club in total, so you can understand the excitement among Addicks fans when they landed him ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

Unfortunately, Maddison's time at Charlton didn't live up to the billing. The 28-year-old made just 10 appearances in total – scoring twice and providing one assist – before falling out of favour at the south London club.

He was sent out loan to Bolton Wanderers in February 2021 and is now with non-league side Spalding United.

Charlie Kirk

Another player that arrived at Charlton with a fair bit of hype, Charlie Kirk had been linked with numerous Championship clubs but joined the Addicks in the 2021 summer window.

The winger reportedly cost the club in excess of £500,000 but having scored 26 goals and provided 35 assists over the past three seasons for Crewe Alexandra that looked like a very sound investment.

But just seven months later, Kirk is plying his trade in a Blackpool shirt after securing a loan move in January on the back of a frustrating start to life with Charlton.

The 24-year-old made 14 appearances for the Addicks but struggled to really cement his place in the side and has already provided as many assists for his new club (two) despite playing only four games.

Kirk has made it no secret that he's keen to secure a permanent move to Bloomfield Road but whether it's to the Championship club or elsewhere, his underwhelming spell as a Charlton player looks likely to end for good this summer.
