Lee Bowyer has claimed that Charlton Athletic's performance against Blackburn Rovers wasn't as bad as he first thought.

The Addicks fell to a 2-0 defeat on Saturday as Tony Mowbray's side scored two first-half goals to ensure they came away with all three points.

Charlton failed to respond and suffered a defeat that means Bowyer's side lie just five points from the relegation zone with a massive game coming up on Saturday against Luton Town.

The defeat came in front of Charlton's biggest home attendance of the season as they packed out the Valley for Blackburn's visit.

It's set to be an intriguing last 13 games of the Championship campaign and Bowyer has expressed that he should have got back in the game on Saturday as there wasn't much in it.

Speaking to London News Online, Bowyer said: "Overall there wasn’t much in it. We could and should have got back into the game. If we do score early in the second half we probably go and get something from the game. It didn’t look as bad as I first thought watching from the side."

The Verdict

It was a case of Blackburn going 2-0 up and then being able to sit back and hold onto what they had.

Despite the result, you feel Bowyer will be confident his side can come out on top against Luton in what looks like a clash that could be important in the race for survival.

The Addicks are still hovering just above the relegation zone and will be keen to beat the Hatters on Saturday to give themselves more breathing room.

Bowyer will know his side needs results in games like the one on Saturday to ensure that his side don't return to League One this season.
