Experienced goalkeeper Stephen Henderson is training with Charlton Athletic as he seeks a new potential permanent home this summer, according to London News Online.

Henderson is a free-agent this summer following his departure from Crystal Palace where he had spent the last two seasons as a largely a back-up goalkeeper within their squad. Although he did manage to make two appearances during his time at Selhurst Park.

The 33-year-old has held spells with the likes of Nottingham Forest, Portsmouth and Wycombe Wanderers as well during the last few years after his first spell with Charlton came to an end in 2016.

In his first spell with the Addicks Henderson managed to make 54 appearances after he had joined on a free-transfer following his departure from West Ham.

According to London News Online, Henderson has been training with Charlton as he aims to find himself a new permanent club in the rest of the summer transfer window.

It is believed that Nigel Adkins’ side are in the market for a new goalkeeper to provide some competition for Craig MacGillivray.

The verdict

Henderson is a very experienced goalkeeper and he could be an ideal option for the Addicks to bring into their squad on a free-transfer this summer if he impresses enough in training over the next few weeks or so.

Having spent time at Charlton before in his career, Henderson already has that connection with the club and that is likely why they have decided to give him the chance to keep his fitness up ahead of finding a new permanent home this summer.

The 33-year-old is someone that is used to being a back-up option and if that is the role that Charlton offered him he would be able to fill that very well.

Although having spent the last few seasons as a bit-part player at Palace, Henderson might not want to sit on the bench again at his next club. It will therefore be interesting to see what happens with his situation over the next few weeks as he continues to train with the Addicks.
