Charlton Athletic have taken aim at Sunderland with a subtle dig at the League One club following the recent release of ‘Sunderland ‘Til I Die 2’ on Netflix.

The first series looked at The Black Cats’ relegation from the Championship in 2017/18, with the club falling through the trap door despite targeting an instant Premier League return.

Now, the second season focuses on the 2018/19 campaign, with Jack Ross looking to lead the club back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

Yet, a defeat to Portsmouth at Wembley features in the new series, alongside a gutting play-off final defeat at the hands of Charlton at the national stadium.

That game saw Sunderland take the lead and look on course for promotion thanks to a Naby Sarr own-goal. However, Ben Purrington levelled the game on 35 minutes before Patrick Bauer broke Sunderland hearts in the 94th minute to send Charlton into the Championship.

With the release of the Sunderland documentary today, Charlton’s official Twitter account made reference to their supporters taking to Netflix earlier in the day:

This season, Charlton sit 22nd in the Championship table, with Lee Bowyer looking to help the Addicks avoid an instant return to the third-tier.

At Sunderland, Phil Parkinson is now at the helm and looking to guide his side into the play-off mix.

The Verdict

Charlton will dine out on their big moment at Wembley in the coming days and weeks, with fans of the club sure to be heading over to Netflix and heading right to the end of the documentary.

It gives them a chance to reflect during this EFL postponement, but on the other side of this is a big fight against relegation.

Failing to retain their Championship status would somewhat tarnish the Wembley memories.
