Charlton Athletic are set to complete the signing of midfielder Sean Clare from Oxford United, a report from TeamTalk has claimed.

Clare joined Oxford from Hearts back in 2020, and made 20 appearances in all competitions for the U's.

The midfielder spent the second half of last season on loan with another League One club, Burton Albion, and scored once in 20 games during his time with the Brewers.

Now it seems as though the 24-year-old is set for a move elsewhere in League One in the coming days.

According to this latest update, Charlton are set to sign Clare after winning the race to complete a deal for the midfielder.

It is thought that fellow League One sides Sunderland, Portsmouth and Ipswich Town were all also interested in signing Clare this summer.

But having apparently made the midfielder a priority target this summer, Charlton manager Nigel Adkins now appears to have got his man.

If confirmed, Clare will become Charlton's fifth senior signing of the summer transfer window.

Striker Jayden Stockley, goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray and midfielder George Dobson have all signed permanently. Meanwhile defender Akin Famewo has rejoined on loan with an option to buy from Norwich City.

The Verdict

This does look as though it could be a good piece of business for Charlton.

Clare is a player who has plenty of experience at this sort of level, but who at 24-years-old, still has plenty of time to make an impact in the game.

Indeed, the departures of the likes of Darren Pratley and Andrew Shinnie also means the centre of midfield was an area Charlton needed to strengthen in, and they will be doing that here.

The fact that Clare was apparently a priority signing for Adkins is also encouraging here, since it shows the manager that he is going to be backed in the market, and gives him confidence that he has the support of the board to buy the players he wants to boost his squad.
