Charlton Athletic have revealed that midfielder Darren Pratley has agreed a new one-year extension to his existing contract at The Valley.

As confirmed by the Addicks' official website, the 34-year-old is now set to stay at the club until 2021.

Pratley joined Charlton last year after being released by Bolton Wanderers and made an immediate impact for Lee Bowyer's side by establishing himself as a key player during the 2018/19 campaign.

After helping the Addicks secure a third place finish in League One in May, the midfielder then played a pivotal role during the club's play-off semi-final second leg against Doncaster Rovers.

With Charlton needing a goal to avoid elimination from the competition, Pratley duly delivered to take the tie to a penalty shoot-out which they subsequently went on to win.

Following the Addicks dramatic play-off final victory at Wembley Stadium over Sunderland, the midfielder has gone on to feature in all four of their Championship fixtures this season.

Speaking about Pratley's new deal, Charlton boss Bowyer said: "Darren has been immense at the start of this season and played such a valuable role at the end of last season.

"He's been outstanding.

"You can't buy his experience and he's great with the young lads.

"He's a role model all around the place and deserves to get his extra year.

"He's worked hard, I love him, he's a real pro who has earned it."

The midfielder could be involved for the Addicks on Saturday when they face Brentford in the Championship.

The Verdict

This is unquestionably good news for Charlton as Pratley has been superb since arriving at The Valley and thus tying him down to a new deal makes perfect sense.

With the Addicks currently occupying fifth place in the Championship, there is no reason why the midfielder cannot play an influential role in helping them achieve success in this particular division.

Furthermore, Pratley could use his wealth of experience to help those who are currently coming through the youth ranks at Charlton.
