Charlton Athletic's majority shareholder Tahnoon Nimer has issued a fresh statement on his Instagram account which appears to state that he will be staying on as a club director.

Earlier today, The Addicks released an official statement saying that Nimer had resigned from his position with the club after a public spat with chairman Matt Southall but that does not now appear to be the case.

They stated that after the accusations first thrown out by Nimer on Monday night, particularly that Southall had misused the money invested in Charlton for his personal gain, that his position had become untenable.

Southall disputed these claims via a statement on the Addicks' Twitter account, revealing that he had already filed for defamation after getting advice from his lawyers.

But a fresh twist has now emerged, with Nimer now revealing that he will be sacking Southall in the coming days and that he is still a director at the club.

He said: "It is now clear that our interest and the current Chairman's, with regards the club's future, are different and irreconcilable. Therefore, we have retained distinct legal counsel from that of the Club's and will shortly take the necessary measures to remove the persons responsible from the Club and appoint a new chairman to lead the Club.

"Until such time comes, Panorama (Nimer's company) will suspend any capital contribution and I will remain in my position as Club Director".

There was real excitement around the club when the East Street Investment takeover was revealed towards the end of 2019 and completed early this year.

It appeared to indicate a new dawn following years of trouble under Roland Duchatelet. However, it now appears that during the January window they were operating under a transfer embargo, as mentioned in Nimer's post.

The verdict

What an utter mess this is and it is impossible to tell from the outside who is telling the truth and who is not.

Things have started out in a very ugly manner and it is likely to continue as such going forward. But the mixed mesages coming from Nimer and the club themselves are not helping anyone.

Charlton fans have been messed around enough in recent years and the likely outcome of this will be their patience snapping with everyone involved.
