Charlton Athletic have agreed a deadline day deal with Wigan Athletic to sign winger Gwion Edwards.

That is according to Football Insider, who report that the Addicks have reached a full agreement with the Latics for the 29-year-old Welshman.

Relatively recently appointed Charlton boss Dean Holden was reportedly keen to add to his side's attacking options prior to tonight's transfer deadline and is said to have pushed for a deal.

Edwards' exit from Wigan Athletic is perhaps no surprise given how little he has been involved for the Latics so far this campaign.

Indeed, in 2022/23, the winger has appeared just twice in the Championship for the club, even despite their struggles in the second tier.

The player also has six months remaining on his current deal at the DW Stadium, as per Transfermarkt, meaning he is likely heading to The Valley for a cut-price fee.

Charlton supporters should not be put off by Edwards' lack of Championship action this season given his previous record in the third tier.

Throughout his career so far, the Welshman has appeared 195 times in League One, scoring 26 goals and registering 16 assists during those matches.

Indeed, on two occasions, Edwards hit double figures for goal contributions in the third tier, first at Peterborough in 2016/17 (7G, 3A) and then again at Ipswich Town in 2020/21 (6G, 4A).

The Verdict

A move away from Wigan Athletic appears to make complete sense for Gwion Edwards this January.

With his deal expiring, he would have very likely became a free agent in the summer, but that would have meant another six months of sitting on the sidelines.

At 29, he is arguably in his prime years and therefore it's completely understandable he does not want to do that.

With Dean Holden seeking attacking reinforcements, the Welshman seems a good pick up, with a very solid track record of goals and assists in the third tier previously.
