Charlton Athletic have issued a fresh statement declaring their full support of chairman Matt Southall following allegations directed at him by the club's majority shareholder Tahnoon Nimer earlier this week.

Nimer revealed he would be pulling out from his backing of the club after levelling accusations regarding Southall's conduct since the recent takeover, and Charlton then confirmed they had reluctantly accepted Nimer's resignation from the board of directors.

However, Nimer released a contradictory statement which suggested he is remaining on the board but will not be investing funds into the club until Southall is removed as chairman, with the pair's disagreement having plunged the club into uncertainty.

The Addicks have now sought to restore order at The Valley by confirming that Southall retains their full support, while they also claimed that Nimer's failure to provide his promised funds meant the club was subject to a transfer embargo in January.

"All the public allegations levelled at Mr Southall by either Mr Nimer or his advisors are denied in their entirety and Mr Southall retains the full backing of the club and its Board," the statement said.

"Mr Tahnoon Nimer, in his capacity as majority shareholder of ESI, has made various funding guarantees to the Club but as of yet the EFL remain unsatisfied regarding the source and sufficiency of any funds proffered.

"The Club is grateful for the EFL’s statement of March 10 clarifying this position and would like it made clear that, as a result of Mr Nimer’s failure to provide the information sought by the EFL, the club was subject to a transfer embargo during the January window."

Nimer is the majority shareholder of East Street Investments who took control of Charlton on January 2nd, with the ownership group having purchased the club from the club's controversial former owner Roland Duchatelet.

The Verdict

It seems extraordinary that the club finds itself in this situation just over two months after the takeover was completed, with the disagreement between key figures in the boardroom suggesting that things could start to get messy.

Charlton's latest statement has attempted to quash all allegations made by Nimer regarding Southall's use of the club's funds, but it is of course still not known how much of an influence Southall is having in forcing through the club's standpoint.

It will be very interesting to see how Nimer responds to Charlton's latest comments given they will only further his desire to remove Southall as chairman, but Charlton fans will just be hoping the situation can be resolved as soon as possible.
