Charlton Athletic have moved to confirm former coach Jose Riga as manager, the club's official website has confirmed.

Jose Riga

The 58-year-old Belgian returns to The Valley for a second spell in charge, after steering the club clear of relegation in his first spell in the 2013/14 season.

Riga was only there for a matter of months however, as at the end of the season he signed a contract to join Blackpool. However his spell there was short lived, and after being appointed in June, he was sacked in October the same year.

The Addicks had appeared to have appointed Serbian manager Nebojsa Vignjevic last night, only to see a furious reaction from fans on social media.

Charlton owner Roland Duchatelet has obviously seen this as a bad sign and backed down on that original decision, opting for Riga instead.

Riga, who most recently was with French club Metz, has signed an 18 month contract at The Valley.

Owner Duchatelet has said to the club site, "It was crucial we dealt with the position of the Head Coach. José did an excellent job in his short period with Charlton two seasons ago. He was very popular with supporters and I believe that he will get us back on track. There are 20 matches of the season still to play and it’s vital that we battle for every point.”

It will be interesting to see the reaction of supporters this time round, but with the contract already signed and an announcement made, it appears they will simply have to live with the owners call this time round.
