Charlton will already have one eye on the next transfer window and the chance to regroup and go again in League One next year - but the club's owner Thomas Sandgaard has admitted to the club's official website that outside factors can affect the Addicks transfer business this summer.

The club were viewed as one of the favourites to potentially seal a promotion back into the Championship this season but instead, it went the other way for the third tier side. They ended up battling near the bottom of the division after a shaky start that ultimately led to the club parting ways with manager Nigel Adkins.

In came Johnnie Jackson who steadied the ship but after a bad run of form over February, Charlton began to slip down the league table again. Whilst they are now in midtable and look likely to consolidate their position in League One, the new manager will be eager to get stuck in to his first summer window and will want to push on next season.

That could mean plenty of transfer dealings in the off season - but owner Thomas Sandgaard has admitted via the club's official website that their transfer activity may not be done as quickly as they would like or in the way they want due to outsidr factors affecting things.

The Addicks chief mentioned things like 'agents fees' dictating that despite a deal being in place, a player could end up somewhere else or that an agreement gets 'shopped around.'

Whilst the team will certainly be doing some business, it just means that it might not be done in the manner or in the speed that the club would like. Speaking about it, Sandgaard said: "A lot of our recruiting really happened towards the end of the window.

"We are already working on seeing if we can start earlier this window. Some of it we might be successful with but there are also other situations.

"A good example is we negotiate with a player and an agent to come and play for Charlton. Our final verbal agreement suddenly gets shopped around and the agent decides to push that all the way to deadline day. Maybe we get the player or another club goes ‘hmm, if I just increase the agent’s percentage a little bit’. Boom - maybe he goes to another club on deadline day. But we had a deal.

“So we’re not entirely in control of how soon or even before the window with free agents, for instance, that we ideally want to add to the team. So we're not entirely in control of that.

"That is the reason why so many deals happen on deadline day because it is financially beneficial for agents and the players."

The Verdict

Charlton will most definitely be recruiting plenty of new faces this summer and that should also mean a few player departures to boot.

Johnnie Jackson will want to make his mark and stamp his imprint on the team if given the chance as boss in summer and that should mean there will be plenty of transfer activity. The only thing is that it again might not go the way that some supporter's want in terms of the timings and deals can often be dragged out until the latter stages of the transfer window.

As Sandgaard has mentioned, it is not entirely in the club's control and that is understandable. They will most likely do their bit to put things in place for as soon as possible so that Jackson can have a proper look at his team and ensure it is to his liking but there are factors that can impact it as the owner has mentioned.

The main thing for the Addicks then is simply that they are able to do business and bring in new places - as long as they can do that, it won't matter when they do that business.
