Charlton Athletic owner discusses player’s future amid reported Blackpool FC transfer interest

Charlton Athletic owner Thomas Sandgaard has publicly discussed the future of Addicks’ winger Charlie Kirk.

Kirk signed for the club last summer for a fee reported to be in the region of £500,000, but spent the second half of the campaign out on loan at Blackpool in the Championship.

As part of that loan deal, Blackpool had the option to purchase Kirk permanently this summer, however, it has been reported that although they are keen on making the winger’s switch to Bloomfield Road permanent, they do not want to pay the fee agreed in January.

That fee is believed to be in the region of the amount Charlton paid for the 24-year-old last summer.

Now, Sandgaard suggests that Kirk could just as likely remain at the club, as he could leave.

“He was obviously someone we paid a lot of money for last season,” Sandgaard said on Kirk, via the South London Press.

“We had him out on loan at Blackpool and he did really well, played a lot of minutes up there.

“We’ve seen interest in him. We’ve got to weigh that between the interest we see from some clubs, how we can utilise him in the squad and how he fits into Ben’s philosophy of playing attacking football.

“Charlie is an attacking footballer, so already there he has a big plus. We’ll see how it goes.”

The Verdict

Judging by Thomas Sandgaard’s comments, Charlie Kirk’s future is very uncertain.

Indeed, it sounds as though the chances of him departing the club are about the same as the chances of him remaining.

It is unclear whether Sandgaard was referring to Blackpool and other clubs, or solely the Seasiders, when he said that Charlton had seen interest in the 24-year-old ahead of the summer.

The winger’s future may come down to whether or not Ben Garner sees Kirk as a part of his plans at The Valley.
