Nathan Thompson is close to completing a move to Charlton Athletic, according to the Rotherham Advertiser.

Rotherham United had been interested in pursuing a move for the free agent but it appears that he has opted instead for a switch to London with Rotherham's League One rivals Charlton Athletic ready to sign him.

Nathan Thompson left Swindon Town at the end of the season despite being offered a new deal by the Robins.

The Swindon skipper had been at the club since joining the academy and he made his senior breakthrough in 2008.

Nine years later and he has finally departed the County Ground with Charlton set to sign him on a free.

The 26-year-old plays predominantly as a defender and he has left Swindon after they suffered relegation to League Two.

A host of League One clubs have been lining up moves for the out of contract ace but Charlton appear set to win the race for Thompson.

Charlton Athletic are expected to have a busy summer of transfer business after Karl Robinson made it clear that he was unhappy with his current squad.

The Addicks, who were long serving members of the Premier League, have been wallowing in the lower leagues for a while now amid off-the-field issues with their owner but Robinson is determined to take them back up to the Championship next season.
