West Ham United defender Winston Reid has turned down the chance to join Charlton Athletic on loan for the rest of the season, a report from TeamTalk has claimed.

Previously a stalwart of West Ham's defence, Reid has been dogged by injuries for the last season and a half, and has not made a senior appearance for the Hammers since a 4-1 defeat away to Swansea City back in March 2018.

Now however, Reid is approaching a return to full fitness, and it seems he is keen on making that return to football with the Hammers.

According to the latest reports, West Ham had been willing to let the 31-year-old leave the club on loan this month in order to give him some much-needed match practice.

It is thought that Charlton had been keen to give the New Zealander that opportunity, but that Rid himself has turned down a move to The Valley, in favour of battling for his place in the West Ham side in the half of this season.

Since joining West Ham from FC Midtjylland in 2010, Reid has gone onto make 222 appearances in all competitions for the London club, scoring ten goals - including the last one ever scored at the Hammers' old Upton Park stadium.

There are currently three-and-a-half years remaining on Reid's contract at West Ham, securing his future with the club until the end of 2022/23 season.

The Verdict

This will be frustrating for Charlton.

With their recent run of poor form seeing them drop worryingly close to the Championship relegation zone, the addition of someone with Reid's experience could have brought a welcome element of experience and stability to their backline.

You do however, have to admire his ambition to make his return to senior football in the top-flight with West Ham, and it will be interesting to see whether that proves to be the right decision for him over the next few months.

Indeed, with the Hammers themselves currently in a fight to avoid relegation from the Premier League, the presence of Reid in their own defence may yet turn out to be something that they themselves need.
