Charlton Athletic are reportedly interested bringing back midfielder Jonny Williams but not before they bolster their strikeforce.
The 25-year-old joined from Crystal Palace on a free transfer in January and made 19 appearances for the Addicks last season, including featuring in the League One playoff semi-finals second leg and final.
The Welshman’s contract with Charlton is due to expire at the end of the month and he has indicated he would be interested in staying at The Valley.
With manager Lee Bowyer having finally agreed a contract extension the focus now will likely be on ensuring he has the players he needs ahead of the South London side’s return to the Championship next season.
Addicks head of recruitment Steve Gallen has said the club would be interested in bringing Williams back next season but that the first priority is to sign more goalscorers.
Speaking to Londonnewsonline.co.uk before the arrival of Leyton Orient goalscorer Macauley Bonne, Gallen said: “Everyone loves Jonny at the club – he is a great lad, enthusiastic and a good player. All I can say are great things about him.”
“We can’t afford what he was on at Palace. We would still like to resurrect that, but the priority right now is to get a couple of strikers in.”
“If we have money to use we will throw it in there, try and get a couple of strikers in, and then pick it up in a week or two.”
“Would we be interested? Definitely. But right now, with the amount of money we’ve got, we have to focus on getting strikers. Once we have done that we can start looking.”
This seems like a smart route to take for Charlton.
Williams was really useful for Bowyer in Charlton’s run in, featuring in every league game bar four following his January arrival, but with the club in the financial state they’re currently in stretching themselves to give him a big money contract would’ve been poor judgment.
Bolstering the strikeforce has to be the priority as new arrival Bonne and Lyle Taylor are currently the only forwards who have contracts with the club past the end of this month.
