Charlton Athletic have confirmed this evening that boss Lee Bowyer has signed a new long-term deal to stay at the club.

The 43-year-old, who began his playing career with the Addicks, has done a superb job since he was appointed a caretaker manager in 2018, with the club winning promotion back to the Championship in his first full season in charge.

Whilst they are in a battle for survival this season, it was to be expected given the resources Bowyer began the campaign with and the fans still recognise how important he is moving forward.

Ever since East Street Investments completed their takeover of the Londoners earlier this month they made it clear they wanted the boss to stay and the club announced on their official site that a three-year contract has been signed.

Speaking to Charlton's media, Bowyer revealed how pleased he was to have this sorted and shared his excitement about what the future can hold.

"I'm delighted. It's something I've been looking forward to getting done and it's been a long while coming. The most important thing now is that the club can start building and moving forward."

The verdict

This was a no-brainer for the new Charlton owners and it is exactly what Bowyer deserves as the work he has done with the Addicks has been miraculous.

Not only has he transformed the team but he has also united the fans and the new owners are right to secure his long-term future as they try to plan ahead.

As Bowyer says, he is relieved to get this all sorted and he will hope a few new players follow by signing up before the January deadline.

The immediate priority is staying in the division but looking further ahead than that, the support will be excited by where Bowyer can take the club.
