Charlton Athletic want to sign Brett Pitman from Portsmouth this month, according to a football journalist.

Reliable football journalist Alan Nixon is reporting that Charlton hold an interest in Pitman and could make a move in January.

Pitman only joined Portsmouth in the summer transfer window after leaving Ipswich Town but he was immediately named captain of the side.

His tally of 13 league goals this season sees him ranked as the joint second top scorer in the division - behind Peterborough United's prolific forward Jack Marriott.

Charlton are aiming to bring in a new striker to spearhead their promotion bid and they are possibly going to swoop for promotion rivals Portsmouth's star man up top.

The 29-year-old has previously had two spells with Bournemouth and stints at Bristol City and Ipswich Town, racking up nearly 150 career goals in over 450 games.

Charlton recently re-signed last season's loan star Stephy Mavididi from Arsenal on another temporary deal and he scored the winner yesterday on his second debut.

But Karl Robinson is reportedly looking for even more fire power up front to compete with Mavididi and Josh Magennis.

Given Pitman's proven record at this level, Charlton are taking an interest in him.

The Verdict

Pitman would be an excellent signing for Charlton but would they be able to get him?

Portsmouth are unlikely to sanction his exit unless they get an irresistible offer and for that sort of money, Charlton are better off looking elsewhere.

The journeyman forward still has two and a half years left on his Pompey deal and I cannot see him being prised away.
