Charlton Athletic are eyeing a move for Chelsea forward Mason Burstow, according to The Chelsea Spot.

It is understood that the Addicks are interested in bringing Burstow back to The Valley this month.

However, Charlton could potentially face competition from Oxford United for the Premier League forward's signature.

As per this report, Oxford and Charlton are said to be leading the race for Burstow.

The 19-year-old made his debut for the Addicks last season during the club's EFL Trophy clash with Crawley Town and marked this personal milestone by scoring in a 6-1 victory.

Burstow secured a move to Chelsea in February 2022 and was immediately loaned back to Charlton for the remainder of the campaign.

The forward managed to find the back of the net on six occasions in the 24 games that he participated in for the Addicks last season before linking up with the Blues.

Yet to make a senior appearance for Chelsea since sealing this particular switch, the forward's only taste of men's football came in the EFL Trophy earlier this season as he scored one goal in four appearances in this competition.

Burstow has featured regularly for the Blues' Under-21 side in the Premier League 2 Division 1 this season.

In the 13 games that he has featured in at this level, the forward has managed to provide eight direct goal contributions.

The Verdict

If this report turns out to be correct, it will be interesting to see whether Charlton will be able to finalise a move for Burstow.

The forward demonstrated glimpses of his ability in the third-tier last season as he scored twice for the Addicks at this level and provided one assist in 16 games.

With Oxford also believed to be keen on a move for Burstow, Charlton will need to act quickly in this particular pursuit by submitting a loan offer.

Burstow is extremely unlikely to be given the chance to impress in the top-flight for Chelsea due to the club's plethora of attacking options.

Therefore, a move to a team in League One will give Burstow the chance to make considerable strides in terms of his development as a player during the remainder of the 2022/23 campaign.
