Charlton Athletic have announced that on-loan midfielder Beram Kayal has had his stay at The Valley cut short, after the Israeli international returned to parent club Brighton & Hove Albion due to injury.

The 31-year-old has been back at his parent club receiving treatment for the last couple of weeks after undergoing a minor operation for a groin injury that was sustained back in November. However, it has now been finalised that he will remain on the south coast.

Charlton swooped in to bring Kayal in on deadline day this summer, but the move has not gone as planned.

Kayal has played a total of just 211 minutes of first-team football for the Charlton this season, with injuries taking their toll on the midfielder. He has made only two starts.

The termination of the loan deal, which was due to run until the end of the season, has freed up an added space for another player to come in this transfer window as a replacement.

Charlton have also confirmed that midfielder Joe Ledley has departed the club after his short-term deal came to an end. The Welshman made a total of just one league appearance for the Addicks.

The Verdict

It was known before the January window began that Charlton were gearing up to terminate Kayal's loan at the club, after it was confirmed that the groin injury suffered would keep the 31-year-old out for a considerable period.

It is a shame for the player and the club that the move did not work out, as the Israeli international has valuable Premier League experience, and would've added more quality to Charlton's midfield had he been fully-fit.
