Charlton Athletic have confirmed their second signing of the January transfer deadline day with Manchester City's Matt Smith joining until the end of the season.

Smith had been on loan with London rivals Queens Park Rangers during the opening half of the season but after failing to break into Mark Warburton's first-team was recalled by his parent club.

City have now agreed that the best place for him now is under Lee Bowyer's stewardship at The Valley with the midfielder brought in to help the club fend off relegation.

QUIZ: Can you remember the scores from Charlton’s first 12 games of this season?

With the Addicks losing Connor Gallagher earlier in the month, the Addicks certainly needed to bolster their central midfield area and they will now feel they have done that - although they continue to be linked with John Bostock as well.

He joins Sunderland winger Aiden McGeady through the door on deadline day and becomes the club's third signing in total this month following Andre Green's arrival on New Year's Day.

The verdict

This move does not bring many guarantees with it but it does do the vital job of bolstering what was a fading Charlton midfield.

Whilst the likes of George Lapslie and Albie Morgan have done well during the current campaign, you get the feeling that Bowyer would not have put so much first-team pressure on them without the significant problems he has faced.

Smith should bring with him a fresh energy and the desire to prove plenty of people wrong following his lacklustre spell at The Kiyan Prince Foundation Stadium.
