Charlton Athletic and Blackpool have been dealt a transfer blow after it was revealed on Liverpool's official website that Liam Millar has joined FC Basel on a permanent deal.

The Football League pair were both previously reported to have an interest in signing the forward this summer, after he impressed many with his performances whilst on loan with the Addicks last season.

Originally arriving at the Valley back in January of this year, the Canadian international went on to make 27 appearances under Nigel Adkins, racking up a respectable two goals and six assists as Charlton narrowly missed out on a play-off place.

However despite seemingly having the opportunity to stay put in England, Millar has now chosen to move to Switzerland and leaves Liverpool after being on their books for the best part of five years after his arrival from Fulham.

During his time with the Reds, the 21-year-old also spent time out on loan in Scotland with Kilmarnock as he struggled to break into the first team at Anfield.

The Verdict

Charlton will probably see this as a bit of a blow, as Millar was decent for them last season whilst on loan in South London.

However by looking at it from a realistic view point, the Addicks were never likely to be able to stump up the kind of money that Basel have paid for the attacker.

He has moved to a club that can guarantee European football consistently and that quite simply is something that Charlton or Blackpool can not offer.

Many will wish Millar well and look back at the fond memories he gave a lot of supporters during his time at the Valley, with Charlton sure to turn their attentions to other targets after missing out on the talented Liverpool youngster.

Adkins is sure to have some irons in the fire lined up.
