There is significant League One interest in Blackburn Rovers left-back Tayo Edun, but it is Charlton Athletic who are leading the race for his signature, according to Football Insider.

LancsLive reported last month that Edun was one of several Rovers fringe players that would be allowed to depart Ewood Park on loan in January, with a Portuguese side showing an interest in the 24-year-old.

It is the courting of third tier English clubs that is more significant at this point though, with Sheffield Wednesday, MK Dons and Lincoln City - the club that Rovers acquired Edun from - all thought to be sniffing around.

However, it is the Addicks who are in pole position to land Edun this month and head coach Dean Holden wants to bring the versatile player to The Valley.

Charlton however are in the midst of a potential takeover, with Wigan Warriors owner Ian Lenagan reportedly attempting to purchase the club from Thomas Sandgaard.

That could impact any potential recruitment for Charlton in the coming weeks, but they are keen to strike a deal for Edun to bolster a position they currently lack depth in.

The Verdict

With plenty of League One experience to his name, Edun would be a smart addition for Charlton.

And it would free up Fulham loanee Steven Sessegnon to play at his more natural role of right-back rather than at left-back, where he has been featuring for the entirety of the campaign.

You get the sense though that the deal rests on whether or not the potential takeover of the club comes close to going through though - if it is left in limbo then it's more likely that deals will not get over the line.

Sandgaard though has insisted he is at Charlton for the 'long-term', so perhaps the sale will not go through - there needs to be a resolution one way or another so deals can be done, starting with Edun.
