Charlton ace issues rallying cry to supporters following Luton defeat

Charlton Athletic defender Jason Pearce has urged supporters to keep backing the team after Lee Bowyer’s side saw their winless run extend to six matches with their 2-1 defeat to Luton on Tuesday night.

Bowyer’s men took the lead in the seventh minute courtesy of Jonathan Leko’s opening strike, but Graeme Jones’ side then got back into the match through Pelly Ruddock Mpanzu’s effort before Izzy Brown scored the winner in the second half.

The result means the Addicks have now not tasted success since their 3-0 win over Derby back in October, with the South London outfit having been severely hampered by a string of injury problems in recent weeks.

Key players such as Lyle Taylor and Jonny Williams have been missing from the side of late, while midfielder Josh Cullen has also recently suffered an ankle setback, but Charlton must now target a return to winning ways when they host Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.

Pearce took to Instagram after the Luton defeat to insist the players are giving their all despite a poor run of form, and he then urged supporters to get behind the team ahead of their upcoming clash with the Owls.

Pearce has been a regular at the heart of Charlton’s defence this season, with this start against Luton marking his 15th appearance of the season, while he has now made 96 appearances since first joining the club in 2016.

The Verdict

Charlton’s recent run of form will have generated plenty of concern around The Valley, with Bowyer’s side having now dropped to 14th in the table, but there will also be an awareness that they have been extremely unlucky with injuries.

A number of the club’s most important players have been ruled out of action in recent weeks, and these constant setbacks will only hinder the morale at the club following their worrying run of six games without a win.

Bowyer will be hoping the likes of Taylor, Williams and Cullen are back fit before the turn of the year, as this could then give Charlton the chance to start on a clean slate in the second half of the Championship season.
