Charlton Athletic claimed a third consecutive League One win under Dean Holden as goals from young duo Tyreece Campbell and Jes Rak-Sakyi earned them a 2-0 win over Barnsley at The Valley.

Campbell, 19, burst into the box and fired in his first goal for the club after 20 minutes while Rak-Sakyi, 20, reacted first to tap in the rebound after substitute Macauley Bonne's effort came back off the post.

The woodwork was kind to the Addicks as Barnsley twice struck the bar but the hosts rode their luck and capitalised on their chances to beat the play-off chasing visitors in arguably Holden's biggest test in the league to date.

The Tykes have enjoyed success on the road this term – boasting the fourth-best away record in the division at kick-off – and were on top for much of the first half but could not make their pressure tell.

Liam Kitching nodded his close-range header wide from a corner and then Jordan Williams forced a diving save from Ashley Maynard-Brewer in the opening exchanges.

It was Charlton that landed the first blow after 20 minutes. Some tenacious work in midfield saw Jack Payne win possession and then slide Campbell through on the left flank. The teenager had players in space on the right but went himself – driving into the box and firing past Brad Collins from an angle.

The Tykes strung together a few slick moves as they looked to pull themselves level and rattled the bar twice, through Josh Benson's swerving long-range effort and then Nicky Cadden's back post header, as the halftime whistle approached.

The hosts survived some early scares in the second half, with a Barnsley corner causing chaos and then Devante Cole hammering an effort over the bar, but the introduction of Aaron Henry and Macauley Bonne just before the hour mark helped them double their lead.

Bonne managed to make room for a shot on the turn in the Barnsley box and though it was tipped onto the post, Rak-Sakyi was there to tap in the rebound.

Barnsley tried to muster a response and their best chances came as they ramped up the pressure in the dying moments but they could not break the hosts resolve as the afternoon ended in three more points for the Addicks', who look to be on the rise under Holden.
