League Two side Oldham Athletic are reported to have identified a potential managerial target as they look to replace Paul Scholes in the Boundary Park manager's dugout.

The Latics have been without a manager since Scholes announced his departure from the club after just seven games in charge on Thursday. Pete Wild, who also stepped in following Frankie Bunn's departure earlier in the season, had been due to take charge of Saturday's game at home to Tranmere before that game was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.

Now though it seems that Oldham have identified the man they want to take over at Boundary Park on a longer term basis. According to a tweet posted by journalist Alan Nixon on Tuesday morning, EFL managerial veteran Steve Evans is being talked about as a strong candidate to take over at Boundary Park.

Evans has been out of work since being sacked by Peterborough at the end of January, having previously worked in the Football League with Crawley, Rotherham, Leeds and Mansfield, and even reportedly agreed terms to take charge of a then League One Oldham following his departure from Leeds in June 2016.

The verdict

There is no doubt that Evans has the qualifications to take charge of Oldham, but as Nixon hinted at in the above tweet, there may be some doubts as to whether the job will appeal to Evans, particularly given the comments made by predecessor Paul Scholes about being unable to work in the way he wanted at the club - not something you feel Evans would take lying down.
