According to the Chronicle Live, Tom Cairney is believed to be open to moving to Newcastle United this summer, with the midfielder hoping for a chance in the Premier League.

Cairney’s dream of promotion with Fulham was ended last night, as the Cottagers suffered a 2-1 aggregate defeat to Reading in the play-off semi-finals.

The 26-year-old’s form in the Sky Bet Championship this season has seen him attract a lot of interest, and Newcastle were keen to make a move for Cairney in January, but were put off by the reported £20m price tag.

However, the Chronicle understands that Fulham may have to lower their valuation of Cairney, with another year in the Championship beckoning.

Cairney is a known admirer of Rafa Benitez, Newcastle’s manager, which could give the Magpies an advantage in the race to sign the impressive Scottish international.

Over the course of the 2016/17 campaign, Cairney scored 13 goals and provided a further 11 for his teammates, playing a pivotal role in Fulham’s run towards the play-offs.

Back in March, Fulham were eight-points behind Leeds United with just eight fixtures of the season remaining, but Jokanovic’s side won six of those games to end the season in the play-off zone.

Despite the efforts of Cairney, Fulham’s defeat to Reading confirmed another season of Championship football.
