Huddersfield Town are targeting a move for Sheffield United defender Richard Stearman in the January transfer window, a report from Football Insider has claimed.

Terriers manager Danny Cowley is reportedly keen to use this window as an opportunity to add to his side's defensive options, and is thought to have identified Stearman as someone who could do that.

The 32-year-old joined the Blades from Fulham in the summer of 2017, and helped the club win promotion back to the Premier League last season.

Since then however, Stearman has struggled for game time, having not made a single league appearance in the current campaign, meaning Blades manager Chris Wilder is now apparently open to selling the defender this month, before he is able to leave the club for free when his contract at Bramall Lane expires at the end of this season.

That is something that has apparently caught the attention of Huddersfield, with the latest reports claiming that the Terriers are hoping to take advantage of Stearman's situation to add some welcome experience to their backline.

Huddersfield are currently 20th in the Championship standings, five points clear of the relegation places after 26 games of the season, meaning they are still under plenty of pressure in the fight for survival.

The Verdict

I think this could be a really good signing for Huddersfield.

The season-ending injury suffered by Tommy Elphick back in November means they could certainly do with adding another option to their defence, and Stearman looks a good candidate to fill that role.

His experience and ability at this level means he should be a more than reliable option to fill that role for Cowley's side, while his contract situation at Bramall Lane suggests this is something that could be done relatively cheaply.

Indeed, with Stearman currently struggling for game time with Sheffield United, this could well be a move he is open to in the hope it will provide him with more welcome opportunities on the pitch.
