Ipswich Town are looking to sign James Collins on a free transfer to boost Paul Hurst's options at the back.

The former Wales international is a free agent after he was released by West Ham in the summer, meaning he could still sign for a club despite the transfer window shutting.

And, HITC Sport are reporting that Hurst is keen on bringing the no-nonsense centre-back to Portman Road.

Despite not having a club, Collins has been training with the Hammers as he looked to maintain his fitness levels throughout the summer.

The 35-year old has spent ten years with West Ham over two periods and played 13 Premier League side for the Londoners in the previous campaign.

Should the Tractor Boys do a deal for Collins, he would provide them with a lot of know-how and experience, having spent the past 13 years as a Premier League player.

Ipswich have endured a tough start to the season, going into today's East Anglian derby against Norwich bottom of the league and without a win this season.

The Verdict

This would be a good signing for Ipswich as Collins has a strong mentality as well as improving things on the pitch.

Most of the summer signings from Hurst have been lower league players, so bringing in an experienced figure, as he has done with Jon Walters, makes sense.

More importantly, Town have looked weak defensively at times this season and the dominant former West Ham man could fix things.
